Avoid LimeWire Viruses

August 31st, 2006

Sure, LimeWire and other P2P File Sharing programs let you download hundreds of songs and applications but they also bring risk to your computer and files. You can also download a lot of malicious files and programs such as viruses and spywares along with these downloads.

To avoid downloading these hazards, I have simple tips for you:

1. Avoid downloading archived files as much as possible. It may contain bundled viruses in it.

2. If you are downloading music, a file smaller than the average MP3 files which is 3MB arouses suspicion, so as much as possible never download it.

3. Try downloading the files which comes from many sources because there is a greater chance that you are not downloading a virus.

4. With my over a year of experience with LimeWire, I have noticed that a file size of 871 kb is always a virus.

Bioremediation for the Guimaras Spill

August 30th, 2006

The Guimaras spill will create more disastrous outcome if we remedies and solutions will not be layed out as soon as possible. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources are thinking of using bioremediation to clear the spill. Three microorganisms – Pseudomonas azelaica, Serratia marcescens, and Xanthomonas maltophilia which are hydrocarbon-consuming organisms can help clear up 87% of the hydrocarbons from the oil.

The process will be costly though because one bioreactor cost $500,000. It’s a very big investment but this does not even suffice for the millions of lives that are affected if no solution can be come up to. Not only the livelihood of the fishermen are lost but also the billions of seawater lives.

Looking Back: The Meningococcemia Crisis

August 23rd, 2006

Do you still remember when meningococcemia crisis heated up the health issues in the Philippines some time in 2005? The Philippine media, using it’s power and duty to inform people exaggerated the issue bringing fears to the Filipinos and worsening scenario about the said disease. In their “attempt” to provide awareness to the people, they inculcated ignorance instead. When I was watching the health news, no any media personnel nor network attempted to emphasize on how meningococcemia is transmitted (or I didn’t just notice), instead we only saw some suspected cases, people wearing face masks. So the Filipino thought that a few meters away from the patient can actually cause the disease making it look like the disease was airborne, which was an exaggeration. The disease is transmitted through close, direct physical contact and through coughing, and sneezing, kissing. It can also spread through saliva (spit) when sharing items such as food or drinks, cups, utensils and drinking straws.

Internet and School

August 21st, 2006

I was first acquainted with the cyberworld when I was fourth year undergrad. After few months, I learned and enjoyed blogging. I even thought for some time I got “obsessed” with blogging. Obsessed because I used to care less about the lecture of my teacher in Physics because I was thinking of the updates I should add on my blog. Yeah, I was not portraying what an ideal student should be. Before, if I was not at my study table, I was infront of the computer. The time I spend was longer on the latter. But I survived my undergrad years despite that. Oh well, God always makes miracles. :D

Being a biology graduate, I thought I only had 2 options to take, go to med school or to research. The second one wasn’t really an option because I was not interested in research ever since. So I tried my luck in med school. At the start of the school year, we had our self-assessment exam and we pointed out some of our not-so-good traits and how do we think can we improve it. Everybody grimaced at me when I said I stay too much infront of the computer. The dean then advised me to better stop it because it will not do me any good. It’s one of the life’s luxuries that I should avoid, so she says. I agreed with her, though deep inside I kept convincing myself I could do that.
