September 30th, 2006

If you don’t have a Firefox Browser, you can get it at http://getfirefox.com. All the Firefox extensions must be downloaded through the Firefox browser for immediate installation.

Extensions extend the functionality of your Mozilla Firefox.

Yale University to Offer Free Courses Online!

September 21st, 2006

BOSTON (Reuters) – Yale University said on Wednesday it will offer digital videos of some courses on the Internet for free, along with transcripts in several languages, in an effort to make the elite private school more accessible.

While Princeton University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and others already offer course material online without charge, Yale is the first to focus on free video lectures, the New Haven, Connecticut-based school said.

The 18-month pilot project will provide videos, syllabi and transcripts for seven courses beginning in the 2007 academic year. They include “Introduction to the Old Testament,” “Fundamentals of Physics” and “Introduction to Political Philosophy.”

The courses cannot be counted toward a Yale degree, and educators say they are no substitute for actual teaching.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to share a vital and central part of the Yale experience with those who, for whatever reason, are not in a position to pursue a Yale education at first hand,” Yale President Richard Levin said in a written statement.

The project is funded by a $755,000 grant from the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

Study Tips from Jam

September 19th, 2006

I was in Mukamo.com a while ago and one poster asked about the other members’ study tips and habits.

Here are my simple tips:

1. Get your study materials then start studying. If you can concentrate, then it’s good. But if you think you can’t absorb what you are studying, stop for a while maybe try some relaxing activities like listening to music and watching TV. But you have to set your mind to go on with your studying later. This way, you have set a goal.

2. As many have advised, you can use highlighters. I prefer using dermatographs because it does not stain my book. Choose a light colored one because light colors bring good energy.

Thank God for “Small” Blessings

September 15th, 2006

I thought of this topic when we were discussing about Multiple Sclerosis yesterday in our PBL session. In the middle of the discussion, I suddenly blurted out “God is good!” Obviously, I distracted everyone’s attention.

I’ve been hearing about multiple sclerosis, even when I had not yet entered med school and totally nonchalant about it. Well, I didn’t have plans of entering med school then, so I was not interested at most diseases. It was enough to hear about them. :-)

Multiple sclerosis stimulated my interest in neurology more. According to the book I read, it affects most of the temperate areas and the incidence can be as high as 250 per 100,000 persons in one of the areas in Scotland. The prevalence increases with increasing distance from the equator. What’s so amazing about that then? Heat is one of the exacerbating factors of this disease and it may cause appearance of new symptoms as well. Fortunately, we are near the equator so the incidence is very low. Could you imagine how unfortunate it would be if you have this disease? You will be complaining of limb weakness, facial pain, visual loss, numbness, bladder dysfunction, depression, fatigue, and other symptoms all the time. The usual course of the disease is remitting-relapsing so there are periods where you’ll become symptom-free. But heat might cause appearance of new symptoms or it might trigger the attack.

Survivor 13 on Studio 23

September 13th, 2006

Twenty castaways will outwit, outplay, outcast each other in the Cook Islands. So far, this is the most controversial season of the show as it stirred up criticisms. The show organizers has decided to divide the castaways into four tribes according to race. The idealists and the anti-racism social groups, as well as most of the fans was disappointed about the new concept of the show. Could this be a publicity move?

The producers of the show must not be prepared about the reactions of the advertisers as well. News stated that the major advertisers of the show pulled off their engagements with the show because of the racism plot the show is cooking.

Prevent Spam in Your Inbox (Part I)

September 13th, 2006

Adapted from Microsoft’s Help keep spam out of your inbox:

Recently, I’ve been receiving a lot of weird messages in my Yahoo! Mail bulk mail folder. Why weird? The most recent spam message I received was dated September 12, 2035. Hmm, I reckon this is one way of spammers to get into the first slot in your Spam Mail folder.

So how can we prevent spam messages? I found these tips in Microsoft.com and gave some additional inputs (italics).

1. Only share your primary e-mail address with people you know. Avoid listing your e-mail address in large Internet directories and job-posting Web sites. Don’t even post it on your own Web site. If you think you really have to post your e-mail address in your websites for contact purposes, create a contact form instead. You can also disguise your address using signature e-mail generators.
