Induced Abortion in the Philippines

January 31st, 2007

During my three-day duty at the OB-GYNE outpatient department, I was overwhelmed by the number of abortion cases. We had an average of five cases a day. At least one-third of these mothers had induced abortion, which means that they resorted to mechanical or chemical means to terminate their pregnancy. Usually they seek for consult because of fever and chills, and other associated symptoms of septic abortion.

Our city is just a small portion of the Philippines, yet there are already numerous induced abortion cases encountered. It made me think (or not like to think) of the rampancy of the case nationwide. Prolife.org say that every year, as many as 750,000 women undergo induced abortion in illegal “clinics” all over the Philippines. That’s how prevalent induced abortion is. It’s quite a frustrating number.

Getting ready for our Junior Clerkship

January 28th, 2007

Our Junior Clerkship will officially start tomorrow. I am excited at the same time nervous and anticipating how the day will turn out. Will I receive my first dose of our preceptors’ or residents’ anger because I was not doing well? I am crossing my fingers and praying that everything will turn out fine tomorrow and for the rest of my life as I traverse the medical field. This is it, there’s no backing out!

Goals of Junior Clerkship:
1. To expose us to clinical medicine.
2. To learn how to be part of the medical team.
3. To improve on taking accurate history and physical examination.
4. To introduce us on principles of developing a management/treatment plan for various diagnoses.

New WordPress Theme: Empowered with Google Adsense

January 28th, 2007

Before I get corrected again for using the word “elegance” to describe my JammedBlue theme, I named this one empowered because it was the first to come out of my mind when I was making the theme. If you have problem with the name, then you’ll have to bear with it because this is my theme. :)

Anyway, this is the blue version of the theme I am currently using. Again, it’s a modified version of the Butterfly WordPress theme by T. Arie Setiawan.

Make your Prom night memorable

January 26th, 2007

February is love month. Aside from anticipating Valentine’s dates, teens are also excited with JS prom nights. Since it’s a memorable night, don’t spoil it. Here are a few tips how:

1. Be with the right company. Chose the right date and ask the right person. Oftentimes, prom nights turn to nightmares because of bad company.

2. Don’t overspend on prom dresses! Looking good on your prom night does not mean spending too much on your dresses. You can borrow a dress from your older sister or a friend. There are also rent-a-gown shops, oftentimes they offer a lot of homecoming and prom dresses. You will only spend around P500-P750, and usually it comes with free makeup. Looking good on your prom night does not entirely depend on how expensive your dress is, you can wear simple ones as long as you carry it very well.

Plastic Surgery: Is it immorality?

January 25th, 2007

During one of our Medical Ethics sessions, we were asked how we view plastic surgery in general as medical students. It was not the sole instance where we have encountered discussions over this matter. Plastic surgery has already been widely tackled in bioethics discussions and subjects of debates – as to its morality. Filipinos, known for their idealism and devotion to God’s creations, usually view plastic surgery as immorality since you are changing God’s gifts. It is a sign of dissatisfaction to His blessings, so it is viewed as an insult.

So what is it with plastic surgery that heightens the arguments of people? WikiPedia defines plastic surgery as a general term for operative manual and instrumental treatment which is performed for functional or aesthetic reasons. The word “plastic” derives from the Greek plastikos meaning to mould or to shape. Plastic surgery clinics such as the Orlando plastic surgery, are coming out like mushrooms. This alarms the people against it and makes the pro ones rejoice.
