We always here hear, even from medical professionals, that, reading in dim light damage your eyes; you need eight glasses of water a day to stay healthy and shaving your legs make the hair grow back faster. A group of researchers delved on scientific bases to prove these common beliefs but it turned out there were none.
Here are the seven common “medical myths”:
- Reading in dim light ruins your eyesight
The majority of eye experts believe it is unlikely to do any permanent damage, but it may make you squint, blink more and have trouble focusing, the researchers said.
- Shaving makes hair grow back faster or coarser
It has no effect on the thickness or rate of hair regrowth, studies say. But stubble lacks the finer taper of unshaven hair, giving the impression of coarseness. Read more…
I recently joined Yahoo! Green, a Yahoo! campaign on saving the planet from emission of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas behind global warming. By joining, you will know how many tons of carbon dioxide you will save per year with your pledged tasks.
Here are my pledged tasks:
1. Air dry my clothes instead of using the dryer. It also saves power!
2. Carpool, take public transit one day per week instead of driving to work. I don’t have my own car so I always take public transportation.
3. Replace my old refrigerator with new energy star one. We’ve been using one ever since.
Talking to plants will make them healthier, so the belief says. But what if they can also talk back and say what they need and express their gratitude? I mean not literarily but through a ring in your phone! That would be interesting, and oh.. odd!
Botanicalls.com has merged plant care with telecommunications, through it new system where your plants can call you on the phone when they need water, when they haven’t gotten enough, and to thank you when they’re no longer thirsty.
How does it work?
Each plant on the Botanicalls system is equipped with sensors connected to an Arduino microcontroller which contains code particular to that plant type. When a plant’s microcontroller determines that the plant needs to make a phone call based on current sensor information, it sends data through an Xbee wireless radio to an Xport gateway. This gateway connects to the internet, where it contacts a PHP script with the plant’s ID number and type of need. PHP then packages this information and passes it on to Asterisk, an open-source telephone system, which generates the call. When the call is placed, a prerecorded audio file is played, expressing the particular desire of that plant.
Did you know that refrigerating hot leftovers, immediately, instead of cooling it first at room temperature, is the best way to avoid spoilage and invasion of bacteria, in contrast to what previously claimed?
It was always thought that leftovers, especially the hot ones, should be cooled at room temperature before storing it in the refrigerator. Accordingly, allowing food to cool at a slower rate reduces the likelihood that it will spoil. Another theory suggests that hot food can somehow interfere with the circulation of cold air in the refrigerator.
But according to the Food and Drug Administration (as reported by NYTimes), leftover food (particularly meat) should be refrigerated immediately after serving, and certainly within two hours of cooking. Read more…
