Did You Know: Text messages can make you quit smoking!

December 25th, 2006

The MSN Health and Fitness section listed the top health articles the readers liked in 2006. The first article was entitled “Crazy Cures That Work“. Interesting, ain’t it? Anyway, what struck me most was the use of text messages to quit smoking.

Researchers at the University of Auckland, in New Zealand, found out that the study group who receivedceived daily text messages containing tips on beating cravings plus motivational words from other quitters were twice as likely to quit smoking compared to the people who went textless. Accordingly, rates of quitting for the cell-supported group remained high after 6 months. “People tend to carry their phones with them at all times, so it’s a readily accessible means of providing cessation assistance,” says study author Robyn Whittaker, M.D. “It’s also relatively anonymous and confidential.”

So I reckon this will be an effective treatment to Filipinos who want to quit smoking as well since the Philippines is considered as the “texting capital in the world”. Aside from that, it costs less than nicotine patch or even cigarette itself.

I bet it would work well in the Philippines since pinoys are so much hooked into texting. Heck, we even used texting to topple a government.
