Last February, J.K. Rowling announced that the seventh and final book of the Harry Potter series, entitled “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” will not be available as e-books. This was already the case of the previous books of Harry Potter.
Two reasons were cited by Rowling for not releasing electronic copies of the book:
1. She was concern about online piracy (which has never been a major problem for the Potter books),
2. And the desire for readers to experience the books on paper.
Although the first reason has minimized the online piracy of the book, it did not totally eliminate it. Copies of the previous versions, available in pdf and other e-book formats, were made available for downloads through P2P sharing programs. These were all user-made.
I thought that this will not be the case for the seventh and final book due to Rowling’s announcement. But apparently, online pirates will not be hindered by it. I was surprised that after few days of release, my sister was reading a copy of the book she downloaded from a P2P sharing program. The pages were captured, and the whole book was made available through pdf. She reasoned that she can’t wait to have her copy of the book, that’s why she settled for the “blurred” version and pirated copy. Sadly, we have no good bookstores here so we have to travel to a nearby city (Cagayan de Oro) for at least 2 hours to get a copy of the book. Although, she got a copy for free, she still plans to get the original book and highly recommends getting a copy.
