E-mail Virus (W32.Stration.DE@mm) Alert! Tips on Preventing E-mail Viruses from Invading Your Computers.

Author: Jam | Filed under Internet, Tips

Today, I have received a separate e-mails with viruses attached from two unknown sources.

The first one (from serv@logoluso.com) has this content:

Mail server report.

Our firewall determined the e-mails containing worm copies are being
sent from your computer.

Nowadays it happens from many computers, because this is a new virus
type (Network Worms).

Using the new bug in the Windows, these viruses infect the computer
unnoticeably.
After the penetrating into the computer the virus harvests all the
e-mail addresses and sends the copies of itself to these e-mail
addresses

Please install updates for worm elimination and your computer
restoring.

At first glance, you would think that the e-mail sender sounded like a very “concerned” internet user. But when I saw the attachment, I already thought it was a virus. But out of curiosity, I saved the file to my Yahoo! Briefcase and it said that the attachment file has a virus called W32.Stration.DE@mm as detected by Norton anti-virus. I tried to search for the details of this virus but there were no results found. This must be a new e-mail virus.

The second e-mail was from a certain “sharon” with this content “The message cannot be represented in 7-bit ASCII encoding and has been sent as a binary attachment.” I presumed that e-mail virus sender bots hide behind “friendly” names because it will be more deceiving. I attempted to download it my Yahoo! Briefcase and it contained the same virus file.

Do not let e-mail worms and viruses infest your computer. Here are few simple tips that might help. Before downloading the file:

1. Be sure that you know the sender. Sometimes, you can also receive e-mail viruses from friends without their knowledge. These are network worms coming from a users computer. I’ve had an experience months ago. I had to block my friend’s e-mail and apologize a million times.

2. If you are using a Yahoo! account, you can save the file to your briefcase first. Through the built-in Norton Anti-virus, a virus can be detected before it goes to your computer.

3. If it seemed an unnecessary e-mail with attachment, it will be best if you delete it immediately without opening.

4. If you are uncertain of the e-mail content, delete it immediately.

5. If it is a suspicious e-mail, delete it immediately. Sometimes, it’s always better to follow your instincts. :-D

6. Sometimes, invasion of these viruses is inevitable. It might be that the anti-virus on your e-mail is inefficient or the virus is new. Download a trusted anti-virus software.

More tips: Download software from a trusted sites such as Download.com. Rely more on the user’s reviews rather than the editor’s review. Before downloading or purchasing, read reviews about the software first. Sometimes the users find more flaws about a certain software than the editors do.

So there, another “geeky” post from me. :-D
