Google tools for your blogs

October 9th, 2006

Google is undeniably the search engine giant, some people even coined “searching” with “Google-ing” (although, Google did not want the idea). Google searches are one of the major sources of traffic to your blog.

Aside from being the search engine giant, Google continually develops webmaster tools that help site owners and administrators to enhance traffic. Currently, they have launched Google Blog Search Ping Service. You can submit your feeds or blog url. This way, Google knows when you have updated your blog and can crawl it instantly. You can automatically ping Google with every update by going to your Admin Panel > Options > Writing. Then copy the following http://blogsearch.google.com/ping/RPC2 on the “Update Services” field. Visit Google Blog Search to know more about this service.

You can also use their Sitemaps tool. Google Sitemaps allow you to inform Google about URLs on your websites that are available for crawling. Creating a sitemap can be a tough job especially if you are still inept with XML tags. Google provides a step by step process on how to create a sitemap. You can also try some sitemap generators to do the work for you. To make the job even simplier, there is an available Wordpress plugin. You just have to install it, modify some options in your Admin panel, then you have a sitemap. You can then add your sitemap in Google Sitemaps. You need to have a Google Account to do this. (If you need an Gmail invitation, you can visit my forum Shameless promotions, eh? :-D . I am giving free Gmail invites). You can then track your crawl stats and your indexed pages.

A Wordpress plugin for Google Analytics is also available for download. This will help you track your visitor statistics and activity.
