How to Completely Block Comment Spam in Your WordPress Blog?

Author: Jam | Filed under Blogging, Webmasters Tools, WordPress

The more you blog, the more spam comments come into your posts. As you blog more and your site gets popular and widely visited, spam comments become your primary enemy. This is where an anti-spam plugins proves to be useful. But it appears that no particular spam filter or spam killer that can be used especially in your blogs. I am currently using 3 spam-blocking plugins for this blog.

The latest versions of WordPress installations come with Akismet, a spam-filtering plugin for WordPress. Akismet can be very useful especially in filtering spam comments containing numerous links, which are always a feature of spam messages. Unfortunately, it fails to do its job sometimes for flagging proper comments as spam. So it would be necessary to check the filtered spam for this error. Problems arise when you got a lot of spam, say hundreds or thousands, to review. It would take you a lot of time, or it maybe impossible for the blogger to finish checking all those spam. You cannot just delete these comments because you might disappoint your readers. Some comments may also contain important things such as a link exchange request, a relevant link to your post, etc.

I added Peter’s Custom Anti-Spam and recently I found Bad Behavior, which is quite a good one. Bad Behavior blocks automated spambots access to your WordPress blog. This plugin is also available for other PHP-based websites. So far, I only get 1 or 2 spam comments per week after I have installed this plugin. At least, I don’t have to worry on checking hundreds of spam comments filtered by Akismet. But there’s one thing that bothers me in using this plugin. According to what I have read few days ago, it can block some “human” visitors from commenting to your posts or accessing your site. Please report it to me if you have experienced this. Thanks.

So the question, how to completely block comment spam in your WordPress blog cannot be completely answered. Well, unless you try all the spam blocking plugins available. Maybe.

Well I believe that that plugin comes with the wordpress package. All you have to do is enable it.
But the best thing would be that comments should be approved by the admin before they are posted on the site.
Correct ? This way you will loose about 10 minutes of your time but your blog is clean

@Sava - Akismet only comes with a Wordpress.com account and not an ordinary Wordpress blog.

@Jam - i think Sava is referring to Akismet. i also tried this plugin you’re using right now but i switched to the Matriphe Keycode plugin. i like it better coz it’s easier to manage.

Deleting wp-comments.php would turn comments off permanently, but it’s not exactly what we would want, right?

@jaypee - akismet comes with the wordpress package from wordpress.org, you just need an API key to activate it.

I use a comment script with turing feature. Strangely, I still get tons of spam comments everyday.

I then switch to one that has no turing feature and it works very well.

I think the key is whether the software has been exploited. If it has, regardless of what security it uses, you will still be spammed.
