Make Firefox Load Faster – Optimization Tweaks, Tools, Tips and Extensions

October 25th, 2006

Recently, I had a problem with the loading time of my sites, including this one and it’s subdomains. I thought it was a host problem and posted a support question at their forums but the members said it loads pretty fast. I could not tell that it was due to the design of the site because I was not having this problem even before. So I tested it through Internet Explorer and this site loads faster, uh surprisingly. I totally forgot about Internet Explorer until I encountered this problem. So I am posting through IE when I am posting this one. :-D

Figuring out how this problem can be fixed, I found these quite useful links to optimize Firefox and make it loads faster.

Firefox Optimization: (You have to change some of the config files)
- Improving Memory Usage: In this article, the author provided a step-by-step process of killing the amount of RAM Firefox uses for it’s cache feature, increasing the speed of Firefox in loading pages, kill RAM usage to 10mb when FF is minimized.

I have used the tips on increasing the loading page of Firefox before and it made my browsing faster than usual.

- Peter Butler from Download.com provides several ways to optimize Firefox.

If you are hesitant to change some of the configuration files because you are afraid of messing up everything, you can download some useful Firefox extensions that may boost up your browsing.
- FireTune: This extension promisses an easy and fast optimization of your browsing experience with Firefox. This includes all the performance optimizations.
- FasterFox: Fasterfox allows you to tweak many network and rendering settings such as simultaneous connections, pipelining, cache, DNS cache, and initial paint delay.

For webmasters, you can help your visitors by making your sites load faster. Here are some tips:
1. Optimize your CSS. BloggingPro.com provided some tips and recommendations of the tools you can use.
2. Create faster loading HTML pages by HTML Source.

You can also add your own optimization tweaks or recommendations for the benefit of everybody.

Update: I downloaded Firefox 2.0 after posting this topic and my browsing speed is now faster. This version is indeed faster than the previous version. So get Firefox 2.0 now.
