The other day, the hospital beside our college building was shaken by the news of the first suspected meningococcemia in our city. We were actually inside the hospital during that time because we were doing hospital rotations. The patient had only minutes at the hospital before his demise. They got a sample from the patient’s lesions and it showed negative. But still the result may be false-positive because the sample was obtained after the patient’s death. Everyone who had come in contact with the patient had to take antibiotics. I was also getting paranoid because the disease is known to be fatal. I bought Ciprofloxacin and immediately took it. The night of that day, I got more paranoid when I felt feverish with muscle and joint pains! I was thinking I may have also acquire the disease and was praying that it’s just a simple fever. Good thing, I woke up well and alive the next morning. Haha.
One of our school lecturers and a doctor once said that one big problem with medical students is hypochondriasis. Because they know the symptoms of the diseases, they tend to think the worst out of a simple disease. I think she was right. Haha.
