Pinoys won’t need LPG someday!

December 28th, 2006

A newly invented gas stove by 2 Filipino engineers will make Philippines LPG-free someday that is, we will be free of the hazards of LPG. Further, the new innovation will also cut off the demand for firewoods; our remaining forests can be saved.

This new product utilizes agricultural wastes like rice hull or ipa as fuel, thus, this could resolve or lessen our problem with agricultural wastes. The stove is environment-friendly, smokeless, economical and efficient. It costs about P500 (if made of GI sheet) and P1,000 (stainless material). This would mean again that it will save the environment from the overgrowing pollution and Filipino households from wasting a lot of money from refilling LPG tanks. Currently, 1 LPG tank (11 kg) costs about P500 and you need to refill it after 3 months depending on the frequency of use. In contrast to the high-priced LPG, the fuel is for free, all one has to do is go to the field and scoop mounds of rice hull left in the open or just burned by farmers. Well, not unless farmers see this as an income opportunity and sell rice hull instead of burning it! But even so, a sack of rice hull may not cost as much as a tank of LPG.

The stove’s main fuel is rice hull. One needs only 2.5-3 sacks (25-30 kilograms) of rice hull a week for such chores as cooking rice (20-30 minutes for 1 kg of rice), boiling water (6-8 minutes), and frying (6-8 minutes). - Philippine Star

Alternative fuels are corn cob and shells of coconut, peanut, and pili nut - all these are readily available to us. The byproduct after cooking carbonized rice hull can be used as soil conditioner, fertilizer, cleaning pots and pans, and insect repellents. This would again mean a saving on resources and money.

We just hope this innovative product gains the attention of our government. Many brilliant inventions from our local scientists have come out these past years but they receive ignorance from the government, instead of support, opening patent opportunities of other countries.

That someday may be a long wait. You also have to consider the fact that a growing number of taxi cabs are using LPG for fuel.

Maybe scientists should look at the potential of rice hull as fuel for these taxi cabs? That would be another interesting invention.

That maybe true but giant oil and gas companies will try to block this from entering the common market by buying out the patent rights and shove it down the drain. They tend to loose billions of dollars if this ever comes into fruition. I hope this technology that big should be protected by the government and promoted openly. This is the only way for the big companies to stay away.

Sad thing is, the government usually protects these giant companies and ignore these new inventions. It’s true that these giant companies contributes much taxes to the government, but the government does not like to think on how much could we cut off expenses if these new inventions can be made available to all.

that’s great news! i hope that this time alternative fuel or energy sources for vehicles and other machines would be recognized by the public and also the government. a big problem are the petroleum companies who would do everything to block this or stop this. also, most car manufacturers who make hybrid vehicles that look weird and ugly so customers won’t buy them.
