Did you know that there was actually an anti-rape condom? I was unaware of it myself until I “dugg” up an article discussing about it. The condom is called RAPEX, which was invented by Sonette Ehlers, a South African woman. It is intended to prevent rape by hooking onto an attacker’s penis, hurting and disabling him.
RAPEX is a new product that was developed to empower women to defend themselves against rapists. RapeX is a device used by women to prevent rape and to identify the rapist. The RapeX prototype was launched on 31 August 2005, at Kleinmond, Cape Province, South Africa.
RapeX is a female condom that damages a rapist’s penis after penetration with sharp microscopic barbs that hook into the skin.

A recent study found out that the safest place to sit inside a car is at the middle of the backseat. Passengers in the middle back seat were 86 percent more likely to survive than those in the front seats, and 25 percent more likely to survive than those in the other rear seats. However, the study also found out that most of the passengers sitting at this area is likely to neglect wearing seat belts, making them more prone to fatal injuries also than those wearing seat belts. Further, not wearing a seat belt in the back can have unfortunate consequences for those up front. One study found that even when passengers in the front wore seat belts, their chance of dying were five times as great if those in the back were not belted, a result of back-seat passengers’ being thrown forward on impact.
So for a safer ride, buckle up and be thankful if you are sitting at the middle even though it’s the most uncomfortable area because you are on the safest zone.

Hand washing is undoubtedly the best way to prevent spread of infectious diseases. Soap manufacturers always come up with innovative products that “enhance” this preventive techniques. We see ads on TV about how effectively hand sanitizers and antibacterial soaps prevent germs which almost always convince the consumers. Recent studies however say that washing hands with ordinary soap and water for 15 seconds reduces bacterial counts by about 90%. But even people who are conscientious about washing their hands often make the mistake of not drying them properly. Wet hands are more likely to spread germs than dry ones. Harvard Health Letter

But experts fear that antibiotic resistance, which is now one of the major health concerns, might result from use of these antibacterial soaps. Further, research shows that these additives don’t add much on hand hygiene. Thus, this serves as a useful reminder that antibacterial soaps aren’t the all-purpose germ fighters that many people think they are.

Did you know that refrigerating hot leftovers, immediately, instead of cooling it first at room temperature, is the best way to avoid spoilage and invasion of bacteria, in contrast to what previously claimed?
It was always thought that leftovers, especially the hot ones, should be cooled at room temperature before storing it in the refrigerator. Accordingly, allowing food to cool at a slower rate reduces the likelihood that it will spoil. Another theory suggests that hot food can somehow interfere with the circulation of cold air in the refrigerator.
But according to the Food and Drug Administration (as reported by NYTimes), leftover food (particularly meat) should be refrigerated immediately after serving, and certainly within two hours of cooking.

A newly invented gas stove by 2 Filipino engineers will make Philippines LPG-free someday that is, we will be free of the hazards of LPG. Further, the new innovation will also cut off the demand for firewoods; our remaining forests can be saved.
This new product utilizes agricultural wastes like rice hull or ipa as fuel, thus, this could resolve or lessen our problem with agricultural wastes. The stove is environment-friendly, smokeless, economical and efficient. It costs about P500 (if made of GI sheet) and P1,000 (stainless material). This would mean again that it will save the environment from the overgrowing pollution and Filipino households from wasting a lot of money from refilling LPG tanks. Currently, 1 LPG tank (11 kg) costs about P500 and you need to refill it after 3 months depending on the frequency of use. In contrast to the high-priced LPG, the fuel is for free, all one has to do is go to the field and scoop mounds of rice hull left in the open or just burned by farmers. Well, not unless farmers see this as an income opportunity and sell rice hull instead of burning it! But even so, a sack of rice hull may not cost as much as a tank of LPG.
