I’m Now on a Semi-Dedicated Hosting

May 16th, 2008

Last November 2007, I made a switch to paid hosting account from enjoying almost a year of service from my free host for worries of losing my site as I’ve experienced from my previous free hosts.

Recently, this blog and my whole hosting account were on hiatus. I had experienced two account suspensions from my web host (WebHostingBuzz) and as I’ve already stated, site suspension is one of the worst nightmares a blogger could experience. The suspensions were due to server (CPU) resource abuse. Apparently, some poorly-scripted WordPress plugins that I’ve been using caused most of the server resource abuse. It’s painful to see how my blog income abruptly fell from it’s usual over $10 per day to only $6 per day. This has made me decide to upgrade my account to a semi dedicated hosting. It costs me $35 per month, it’s way more expensive that my previous hosting account which costs only $6/month, however the security and assurance of not experiencing another blogger’s nightmare is worth the cost.

What Are The Advantages of a Dedicated Server or a Semi-dedicated server?

The advantages of a dedicated server can best be described by the following analogy:

Suppose you wanted an automobile. You could not afford to buy one for yourself, so you decided to go in with four friends and everyone would own a piece of the automobile. This meant that although it was cheaper for everyone, they all had to share the car. A schedule would be worked out and everyone would abide by the schedule of when they could use the car.

Site Suspension: A Webmaster’s Nightmare

February 15th, 2008

When I was just starting to blog, I feared of two things: not being able to generate blog traffic and site suspension. I had managed to work on the first one since I am now getting a satisfying number of page views per day. The latter was my worry before I switched to paid hosting from WebHostingBuzz.com. I’ve had several site suspension before, and termination at some point when I was still hosted by free hosts. I’ve had several site migration. Somehow, I blame this mishaps why my main blog (jammedph.com) is not visible now in search engine rankings and Google bot stopped crawling it.

But when I switched to paid host, I thought site suspension will no longer be a problem. But imagine to my disappointment and nightmare when I saw my site last night with a suspension notice. According to the technical staff, some scripts I am running in my website was responsible for a resource abuse. Unexpectedly, the plugins installed in this blog caused all the problem. Problems like this is common in shared hosting where you share IP address with other hosted members.

I immediately contacted the billing department and I was grateful because of their prompt reply and unsuspended my account.

What did I learn from this incident?

1. Always do a blog backup. It was only these days that I always forget to backup my account. I was relying to much on my webhost to do all the backups for me which should not have been the case.

Utilize Coupon Codes to Avail Discount on Domain Names and Hosting

February 14th, 2008

Domain name registration these days costs an average of $9.00/year. It already sounds much for me. So I looked for ways that will give me cheaper domain registration. My first option was to search the web for cheap domain names. My second option is to use a coupon code to avail discount. But where do I get one?

Luckily, I found a great site which provides coupon promotional codes including those for domain names and hosting. Retail Me Not is an easy way to find online coupon codes.

Using the FEBLUV code (NameCheap’s coupon code for February) I got the domain name for only $8.41 from its original price of $9.96!

Promotional coupon codes for domain registration and hosting.

How the send and receive feature of Paypal helped me?

January 8th, 2008

The recent development of Paypal service in the Philippines, which now includes receive feature has helped a lot of internet entrepreneurs, bloggers, online auctioneers, sellers and buyers, webmasters, and the regular internet users.

In my case, it also helped me a lot:

1. For my web hosting: I am now able to pay for web hosting for my sites without worrying about my account being deleted for not logging in for days. My sites have been hosted by Ejam Hosting for almost a year but due to limited features and increasing website demand on bandwidth and space, I decided to switch to a paid host.

2. Online Auctions: I can now join in online auctions without the need to worry on the payment method. Most online auctions support Paypal such as eBay. I’ve been wanting to buy a 3G phone. My Paypal balance, however, is not yet sufficient to buy a new one.
