Ring! It’s Your Plants Calling

August 12th, 2007

Talking to plants will make them healthier, so the belief says. But what if they can also talk back and say what they need and express their gratitude? I mean not literarily but through a ring in your phone! That would be interesting, and oh.. odd!

Botanicalls.com has merged plant care with telecommunications, through it new system where your plants can call you on the phone when they need water, when they haven’t gotten enough, and to thank you when they’re no longer thirsty.

How does it work?

Each plant on the Botanicalls system is equipped with sensors connected to an Arduino microcontroller which contains code particular to that plant type. When a plant’s microcontroller determines that the plant needs to make a phone call based on current sensor information, it sends data through an Xbee wireless radio to an Xport gateway. This gateway connects to the internet, where it contacts a PHP script with the plant’s ID number and type of need. PHP then packages this information and passes it on to Asterisk, an open-source telephone system, which generates the call. When the call is placed, a prerecorded audio file is played, expressing the particular desire of that plant.

The Pandesal

Ever since I could remember, the price of pandesal, a staple bread for Filipinos, remains at Php 1.00. Good news! The price will still remain as is. The local flour millers, bakers and importers who’ve had a meeting with the Department of Trade and Industry promised that the price will not rise despite the increasing price of flour and all other commercial products.

Well, this should serve as good news to families who rely on pieces of pandesal for breakfast. We just hope also that the size of the pandesal stays as is. But as I could remember, prior to the continuing price increase lately, one pandesal was already sufficient for one person, nowadays, you need to buy for two more.

June 3rd, 2007
RapeX anti-rape condom

Did you know that there was actually an anti-rape condom? I was unaware of it myself until I “dugg” up an article discussing about it. The condom is called RAPEX, which was invented by Sonette Ehlers, a South African woman. It is intended to prevent rape by hooking onto an attacker’s penis, hurting and disabling him.

RAPEX is a new product that was developed to empower women to defend themselves against rapists. RapeX is a device used by women to prevent rape and to identify the rapist. The RapeX prototype was launched on 31 August 2005, at Kleinmond, Cape Province, South Africa.

RapeX is a female condom that damages a rapist’s penis after penetration with sharp microscopic barbs that hook into the skin.
