Medicine to Full-time Blogging?

July 31st, 2008

Photo courtesy of NY TimesNY Times featured a story of a full-pledged doctor, Dr. Arnold Kim, who traded medicine to become a full-time blogger.

It had been a hobby — albeit a time-consuming one — while Dr. Kim earned his medical degree. He kept at it as he completed his medical training and began diagnosing patients’ kidney problems. Dr. Kim’s Web site now attracts more than 4.4 million people and 40 million page views a month, according to Quantcast, making it one of the most popular technology Web sites.

It is enough to make Dr. Kim hang up his stethoscope. This month he stopped practicing medicine and started blogging full time.

The story scares me because I have certain ideation sometimes (that is giving up medicine for blogging). I could pretty much relate to his story. In my case, I have been having a struggle in adjusting my time on my hospital duties and blogging since I know how lucrative blogging is. I actually have thought of quitting medicine and do full-time blogging instead. I was thinking that I could earn more if I have all the time to make posts regularly and create blogs to add up to my online earnings. Thank God, however, that I was still sane enough not to give up medicine for blogging. I still think that pursuing medicine will lead me to a much brighter and fulfilling career.

Where to Download Pinoy 3gp Music Videos?

January 18th, 2008

I’ve been planning of putting up a blog containing OPM 3gp videos for cellphones. In fact, I’ve already started it. But it is still on experimental stage. Currently, I am using WordPress as my platform but I am also opting to use a CMS like Joomla! or Xoops.

Where did the idea come from?

A friend of mine has been obsessed with 3gp music videos that he would ask me every time we meet to download him some 3gp music videos, even movies.

Where to get videos
I usually search for member-uploaded Pinoy music videos in YouTube.com. There are also available ones in Google Video and Yahoo! Videos.

Software Needed:
I am currently using YouTube Downloader which can both download videos directly from YouTube in .flv format. It has also the ability to convert flv files to 3gp format. It also allows you to convert downloaded videos for Ipod, Iphone, PSP, Windows Media, XVid and MP3.

How to Enhance Relationships

October 8th, 2007

This is another e-mail I always want to receive in my inbox. :D

TRUST is a very important factor for all relationships. When trust is broken, it is the end of the relationship. Lack of trust leads to suspicion, suspicion generates anger, anger causes enmity and enmity may result in separation.

A telephone operator told me that one day she received a phone call. She answered, “Public Utilities Board.” There was silence. She repeated, “PUB.” There was still no answer. When she was going to cut off the line, she Heard a lady’s voice, “Oh, so this is PUB.Sorry, I got the number from my Husband’s pocket but I do not know whose
number it is.”

Without mutual trust, just imagine what will happen to the couple if the telephone operator answered with just “hello” instead of “PUB”.

My Green Plan to Save the Planet

September 15th, 2007

I recently joined Yahoo! Green, a Yahoo! campaign on saving the planet from emission of carbon dioxide, the main greenhouse gas behind global warming. By joining, you will know how many tons of carbon dioxide you will save per year with your pledged tasks.

Here are my pledged tasks:

1. Air dry my clothes instead of using the dryer. It also saves power!

2. Carpool, take public transit one day per week instead of driving to work. I don’t have my own car so I always take public transportation.

3. Replace my old refrigerator with new energy star one. We’ve been using one ever since.

4. Go meatless for one meal each week.

Post-Graduate Intership: Which is the best hospital?

September 7th, 2007

I thought that my four years of stay in medical college and the hospital rotations I am having right now for clerkship were the hardest part of my medical education, until I faced choosing for the best hospital to do my post-graduate internship, which include:

1. Monetary constraints. I come from an average family so I had to consider it.

2. The board exam which comes 2 months after internship. Many have advised that I should choose a hospital which is not too busy, nor benign to prepare for the board exam.

3. The skills I could acquire. I was advised that I should go to a public hospital to acquire more skills. In our clerkship, we were exposed to both private and public hospitals and I could really compare the difference. It is true that when you are at a private hospital, you acquire “lesser” skills, due to the lesser number of cases to handle, but the advantage is you get the appropriate techniques. Further, in private hospitals, you are “hands off” when you are not a license yet because the patient pays for a better service. At a public hospital, you are are exposed to different kinds of cases, the great thing is you can do the procedures yourself. But of course, this differences varies among hospitals.

Wanted: A sustainable solution!

August 7th, 2007

It seems that the health care crisis continues to be a problem in the Philippines. We have been running out of health manpower as nurses, midwives and doctors go abroad. It seems that we have another thing to be afraid of - the Philippines is also running out of hospitals!.

The Philippine Medical Association (PMA), based on a survey, reported that the number of hospitals, both private and public, in the country has dropped by 55 percent in the last 20 years - from a total of 2,000 in 1987 to only 890 at present.

Further, the new government policy that prevents private hospitals from “detaining” patients until they settle their hospitalization bills will worsen the situation. It may lead to bankruptcy of more hospitals which may lead to a more deteriorating health care system.

To probably mask this worsening situation, the Department of Health denies the claim that this problem exist.

What do we really need to solve the health care problem? Simple, we need a sustainable solution. As I have observed, the government is always acting on impulse. The worsening education status of the Filipinos, for example, was thought can be solved by offering student loans. Although, this seems a promising solution, it will not really address the root of the problem - which is poverty. I think it will work, but only as supplementary aid for the purpose of defeating lack of education.
