Plastic Surgery: Is it immorality?

January 25th, 2007

During one of our Medical Ethics sessions, we were asked how we view plastic surgery in general as medical students. It was not the sole instance where we have encountered discussions over this matter. Plastic surgery has already been widely tackled in bioethics discussions and subjects of debates – as to its morality. Filipinos, known for their idealism and devotion to God’s creations, usually view plastic surgery as immorality since you are changing God’s gifts. It is a sign of dissatisfaction to His blessings, so it is viewed as an insult.

So what is it with plastic surgery that heightens the arguments of people? WikiPedia defines plastic surgery as a general term for operative manual and instrumental treatment which is performed for functional or aesthetic reasons. The word “plastic” derives from the Greek plastikos meaning to mould or to shape. Plastic surgery clinics such as the Orlando plastic surgery, are coming out like mushrooms. This alarms the people against it and makes the pro ones rejoice.

How to avoid exam stress or anxiety?

January 25th, 2007

Yesterday, we had our oncology exam, hopefully our last major exam as medical students, before we go to junior clerkship, which will start on Monday. It was one of the hardest exams we have taken ever since our stay in the college. Everyone of us could just shake heads while exiting the examination room, and anxiety was apparent on our faces.

Many of us experience the so-called “exam anxiety or stress”. This is one of the problems, especially among students. I think it is just a natural occurrence because it’s man’s nature to fear failures. Sometimes, anxiety can also be our drive for excellence. We get anxious, and anxiety pressures us to do better. But as the saying goes, “too much is bad.” If you worry too much, you get mentally blocked. Mental block is not just an effect of caffeine overdose, or a sleepless night, but also anxiety over the exam per se can cause it.

Scrap the MSU-IIT Privatization

December 12th, 2006

I have spent four years of my life as a college student in Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology with a course in BS Biology. I have gotten the best education of my life with a minimal tuition fee ranging from P500 to P1000 per semester. MSU-IIT was named as the Center of Excellence in Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics and has got several recognitions.

Congressman Tikbong Badelles authored the House Bill No. 658 which aims for the separation of MSU-IIT from its mother university, Mindanao State University. But this could mean that separation from MSU could mean the commercialization of MSU-IIT.

Study Tips from Jam

September 19th, 2006

I was in Mukamo.com a while ago and one poster asked about the other members’ study tips and habits.

Here are my simple tips:

1. Get your study materials then start studying. If you can concentrate, then it’s good. But if you think you can’t absorb what you are studying, stop for a while maybe try some relaxing activities like listening to music and watching TV. But you have to set your mind to go on with your studying later. This way, you have set a goal.

2. As many have advised, you can use highlighters. I prefer using dermatographs because it does not stain my book. Choose a light colored one because light colors bring good energy.
