Thank God for “Small” Blessings

Author: Jam | Filed under Health, Life, Personal

I thought of this topic when we were discussing about Multiple Sclerosis yesterday in our PBL session. In the middle of the discussion, I suddenly blurted out “God is good!” Obviously, I distracted everyone’s attention.

I’ve been hearing about multiple sclerosis, even when I had not yet entered med school and totally nonchalant about it. Well, I didn’t have plans of entering med school then, so I was not interested at most diseases. It was enough to hear about them. :-)

Multiple sclerosis stimulated my interest in neurology more. According to the book I read, it affects most of the temperate areas and the incidence can be as high as 250 per 100,000 persons in one of the areas in Scotland. The prevalence increases with increasing distance from the equator. What’s so amazing about that then? Heat is one of the exacerbating factors of this disease and it may cause appearance of new symptoms as well. Fortunately, we are near the equator so the incidence is very low. Could you imagine how unfortunate it would be if you have this disease? You will be complaining of limb weakness, facial pain, visual loss, numbness, bladder dysfunction, depression, fatigue, and other symptoms all the time. The usual course of the disease is remitting-relapsing so there are periods where you’ll become symptom-free. But heat might cause appearance of new symptoms or it might trigger the attack.

One amazing fact about this disease is it usually affects persons with higher socioeconomic class. This is linked to poor sanitation as well. Viruses (especially “chicken pox” and measles) have a considerable role in the pathogenesis of the disease. People in the lower socioeconomic class mostly encounter viruses at an earlier age so they have the tendency maybe of developing immunity against these viruses.

So, can my group mates blame me for interrupting them?

We should be thankful for everything we have and where we are right now because surely, God has His purpose for providing it to us. God knows everything after all.

By the way, thanks to all who left comments and visited my blog. I will return to you soon as I finish my school works and requirements. Today will be our Individual Patient Assessment (IPA) where will have simulation of emergency cases. This is done yearly but this time it will different because our preceptors and faculty might act as the patient. I can feel my heart beating faster now. Good thing there’s blogging which serves as diversion. :-D
