The Devil’s Dictionary

November 16th, 2006

I was surprised that there’s actually a Devil’s Dictionary. Hah, we never took this up during our Literature Class. :-D I was searching for a definition a while back when I was redirected to a devil’s definition of the term.

Examples of the word defined:

ABDOMEN, n. The temple of the god Stomach, in whose worship, with sacrificial rights, all true men engage. From women this ancient faith commands but a stammering assent. They sometimes minister at the altar in a half-hearted and ineffective way, but true reverence for the one deity that men really adore they know not. If woman had a free hand in the world’s marketing the race would become graminivorous.

APOLOGIZE, v.i. To lay the foundation for a future offence.

BACK, n. That part of your friend which it is your privilege to contemplate in your adversity.

BACKBITE, v.t. To speak of a man as you find him when he can’t find you.

BEAUTY, n. The power by which a woman charms a lover and terrifies a husband.

Actually I find the definitions rather humorous than evil. :-D Some of the definitions can be regarded by others as sexist, nationalist, racist, or just generally offensive.

The Devil’s Dictionary was written by Ambrose Bierce.
