Toxic iPhones

Author: Jam | Filed under Health, In the News, Technology

It was only few months ago when iPhones were released in the market. This new gadget has been a subject of recent controversies even at its less than a year in the market. It has been a subject of recent hacking and piracy and now Apple is facing yet another controversy. An environmental group alleged iPhone to contain reproductive toxin.

A series of tests was done with the iPhone and it revealed chemicals that included “phthalates” in the vinyl plastic earphone wiring at levels that are prohibited in young children’s toys.

Phthalates, or phthalate esters, are a group of chemical compounds that are mainly used as plasticizers (substances added to plastics to increase their flexibility). Wikipedia.org

According to researches, high level of exposure can cause cancer and occupational exposure may lead to adult infertility. Demasculinization may also result in a fetus exposed in utero to these toxins.

Further, Greenpeace, a renowned environmental organization, also has disassembled an iPhone to find out what’s inside, and claims to have uncovered two types of hazardous substances, some of which have already been eliminated by other mobile phone makers, according to the organization.

This analysis claims the iPhone contains toxic brominated compounds (indicating the presence of brominated flame retardants) and hazardous PVC.

Comparing Apple to other manufacturers, Greenpeace notes that Nokia devices are PVC free, while Motorola and Sony Ericsson already have products on the market with BFR free components.

Recent reports stated that Apple could face suit after this allegation.
